There are several ideas I would like for us to explore in this chapter. (I know you will share many ideas with us)
Alabama met the "No Child Let Behind" regulations by adding ACCESS labs in every high school in the state. If you are not familiar with this you can read about it here. It was designed to allow every student in the state with the same access to all courses taught in the state. Schools share courses with a teacher delivering a course at one location to a students at another location through video conferencing. The teacher can see his/her students, share documents with them, allow them to see her computer or information she is teaching, etc. These labs were equipped with Video Conferecing Equipment, Notebook Computer Carts, Fax Machines, etc. This equipment is now getting out of date and guess what........no money to update. Not only could students take a face-to-face course, they can take an online course. This is acheived with the use of a student management system the students log in too. The teachers post the coursework for students to complete. These courses are actually taken at school during the school day. I do not believe students are allowed to take the course on their own. I am sure Marilyn can tell us much more about how the high school is using ACCESS.
Several states have "Virtual Schools" that allow students to take courses to supplement their coursework (if allowed by the school they are attending) or students attend virtually from home. Florida has the top virtual school and has been in existence the longest. Take a look and see what you think! Florida Virtual School
Alabama has Homework Helpline! If you have had experience with this, we would love to hear from you!
Anyone, not just students, can lean almost anything from the Khan Academy. Have you looked at this one? Check it out and tell us what you think.
There are numerous places online to learn a language. Here are just a few.
Above are just a few things that are available to increase knowledge. Many of them are not just for students. Are these disruptive technologies going to widen the gap between low income students and average or above income students? I remember reading about the beginnings of Sesame Street and how it was designed for chldren of lower income families. I am not sure if it is still true but in the beginning it widen the gap between students. Low income children were not the ones watching, it was the middle and above income students.
Share your ideas on all these disruptions. Share with us what you think the strengths and weaknesses of the above, or anything discussed in Chapter 4.
